National president and CEO of Girls Inc. headlines November 15 luncheon

Joyce Roché will be the keynote speaker at the next event in the Distinguished Women Leaders lecture series. The luncheon begins at noon at the Hyatt Regency-Dallas, 300 Reunion Boulevard.

The Distinguished Women Leaders Lecture Series was formed by the Greater Dallas Chamber in partnership with The Dallas Morning News to:

  • Educate the public about women leaders in both the profit and non-profit sectors
  • Identify future opportunities for women in leadership positions
  • Highlight the achievements of women while focusing on the challenges the have overcome.

Joyce Roché is a woman whose experiences in the private sector have served her well in the non-profit arena. Roché was a trailblazer in the corporate world for 25 years. She was formerly the president and COO of Carson Products and was the first African-American vice president of global marketing at Avon. Then she made an enormous decision to take everything she had learned about management and marketing and apply it to a cause she cared deeply about.

Girls Incorporated is a national research, education, and direct advocacy organization that inspires girls to be strong, smart, and bold. Programs based on research encourage girls ages 6 to 18 to take risks and master physical, intellectual, and emotional challenges. Roché has developed an aggressive business plan for Girls Inc. and will seek dynamic growth over the next few years. In carrying out this plan, the organization will triple the number of the girls served, from more than 740,000 this year to 2.4 million in 2004.

"When I was growing up, there weren't many role models," says Roché. "Girls need to know that they can do anything they want to. They also need to know they have the confidence and ability to take the healthy risks they need to achieve their dreams."

Roché is a graduate of Dillard University in New Orleans and holds an MBA from Columbia University. She has successfully completed Stanford University's Senior Executive Program and holds honorary doctorate degrees from Dillard University and North Adams State College. She currently sits on the Board of Directors of SBC Communications Inc., Tupperware Corporation, and Anheuser-Busch Companies. She also sits on the Board of Trustees for Dillard University and the Queens College Foundation

Luncheon location is the Hyatt Regency-Dallas, 300 Reunion Boulevard. The luncheon begins at noon with registration at 11:30 a.m. Cost is $45 for Chamber members and $65 for prospective members. To register online visit www.dallaschamber.org and click on "events."
