Taxes and Public Education in Texas:
The Greater Dallas Chamber wanted to make sure that you are kept informed on what is happening in regards to the funding of public education.
Critically important hearings are underway that merit your attention.
The Texas Tax Reform Commission is studying the state's tax structure and how we fund our public schools.
The Commission is holding public hearings across the state to formulate recommendations to the Texas Legislature, which is expected to consider those recommendations - under directive from the Texas Supreme Court - before June of 2006.
This effort has far-reaching and long term implications for Texas schoolchildren, Texas consumers, and businesses, as all forms of taxation (property taxes, sales taxes, business taxes) to fund our schools will be on the table for debate and discussion.
The Commission is inviting and welcoming public input.
We encourage you to attend the public meeting in your area, offer your input now, and affect our public schools and tax structure into the future. The hearings schedule is as follows:
- Wednesday, Jan. 18
10:00 a.m. - Temple Texas Tax Reform Commission to hold public hearing. Location TBD 5:00 p.m. - Waco Texas Tax Reform Commission to hold public hearing. Location TBD
- Monday, Jan. 23 10:00 a.m. - Lubbock
- Thursday, Jan. 26 5:00 p.m. - Laredo
- Friday, Jan. 27 10:00 a.m. - Valley
All Texans are invited to attend to share their views on how best to reform our tax structure to fund public schools and lower property taxes.
