Chamber group, Dallas fire department install 1000 smoke detectors
The Chamber’s 2008 Leadership Dallas class and Dallas Fire-Rescue Department joined forces last month to install 1000 smoke detectors in the Hamilton Park neighborhood .

The Leadership Dallas class and other business volunteers carried out Operation Installation, visiting hundreds of Hamilton Park homes. Besides the all-day blitz installing smoke detectors, the group conducted a free fire safety carnival at the Willie B. Johnson Recreation Center. Activities included games and interactive activities for children and adults. As part of the program, Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert proclaimed April 19 as Leadership Dallas Day.

Studies show that about 90 percent of homeowners have smoke detectors. But almost half of all fires occur in homes without a working smoke detector. Two-thirds of fire-related fatalities occur in homes without a working smoke detector.

Sponsors for Operation Installation included Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, Bank of America, Becky Mayad Public Relations, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, Grant Thornton LLP, Invensys Process Systems, Jackson Walker LLP, Oncor Electric Delivery, Strasburger & Price, LLP and Wachovia.
