Sen. Shapiro, Rep. Eissler to look at student accountability, other issues

State Sen. Florence Shapiro and State Rep. Rob Eissler will update the Chamber on education at the state level and its effect on DFW and Texas at a Chamber luncheon May 21.

As well as chairing Senate Education and House Public Education, Senator Shapiro and Representative Eissler currently co-chair the Select Committee on Public School Accountability. The 15-member committee is directed to provide a comprehensive review of the public school accountability system and conduct public hearings throughout the state and solicit testimony from parents and other interested persons.

Our Education Update luncheon will provide you the opportunity to hear their perspectives on these key issues and more.

Sen. Shapiro has chaired the Senate Education Committee since 2003. Recently the senator has passed legislation to overhaul the state's school finance system. Some of her most notable work has been on House Bill 1. This bill is known for providing more money for schools, a teacher incentive pay program, and pay raises, and general education reform, among other initiatives.

Rep. Eissler chairs the Public Education Committee in the House. In 2007 he was appointed by Gov. Rick Perry to the Education Commission of the States. This year, he was named Legislative Advocate of the Year by the Texas PTA and received the Friend of Texas Children Award from United Ways of Texas.
